Cork City Shopping

Cork City Shopping

Cork City is Ireland's second city and the city centre has all the larger types of stores that you would expect. UK guests will recognise many familiar High Street chains, maybe this what draws you into Cork, but they will after all sell the same as you can get at home.

You'll find Debenhams, Marks & Spencers, Dunnes Stores, Boots, Laura Ashley, Pennys, TK Maxx, Snow & Rock, Waterstones, Easons, New Look, Gap, Forever 21, Topshop, Next, River Island, Tommy Hilfiger, Office Shoes, Smyths Toys, Argos as well as the phone stores and other chains you'd expect.

Cork also has a wide variety of independent stores, less familiar names and markets; these are surely worth greater attention. For example.

The English Market
This is a 6 days a week, covered market for fresh food of all kinds. It contains one of the best, and biggest fishmongers you'll ever see. As well as a few fabulous cheese stalls, selling local and exotic varieties. There are butchers and green-grocers, bakers and confectioners too. Don't miss it. And look out for Cork specialities - 'spiced beef' and 'buttered eggs'. In the alleyways leading the market from Patrick street you'll find a few excellent 'vintage' clothes stores.

Oliver Plunkett Street
Newly pedestrianised Oliver Plunkett street is crammed with independent stores off all kinds, as are the side streets that lead to it. Just take time browsing.

The Harrods of Ireland is Brown Thomas. Prominantly sited on the main street (Patrick Street) Brown Thomas surely has all the luxury goods you'd every want.

"Cork City centre is big, but not huge, and its easy to see it all without walking miles. Parking is usually OK, if going at the weekend arrive before 11am. There's a great variety of shops, and things happening in the streets. Don't gravitate to larger stores, the smaller ones are usually more interesting." - Martin
