Kenmare and Killarney

Kenmare and Killarney

Kenmare describes itself as the Jewel in the Ring of Kerry. Kenmare (Irish: An Neidín, meaning "the little nest") is a small town in the south of County Kerry, Ireland. The name Kenmare is the anglicised form of Ceann Mara meaning "head of the sea", referring to its position at the head of Kenmare Bay.

Moll's Gap is a mountain pass on the N71 road from Kenmare to Killarney in County Kerry Ireland. On the Ring of Kerry route, with views of the Macgillycuddy's Reeks mountains, the area and its shop is a panoramic spot visited by thousands of tourists each year. The rocks at Moll's gap are formed of Old Red Sandstone.

Killarney (Irish: Cill Airne, meaning "church of sloes") is a medium-sized town in County Kerry, southwestern Ireland. The town is on the northeastern shore of Lough Leane, which is part of Killarney National Park. The town and its hinterland is home to St Mary's Cathedral, Ross Castle, Muckross House and Abbey, the Lakes of Killarney, MacGillycuddy's Reeks, Purple Mountain, Mangerton Mountain, the Gap of Dunloe and Torc Waterfall. Its natural heritage, its history and its location on the Ring of Kerry make Killarney a popular tourist destination.

Killarney is, according to the online travel website Tripadvisor, Ireland's most popular travel destination for 2015, placing it 23rd in Europe.

"The Ring of Kerry is world famous, a route around the shores of that County. Some of our guests have ventured and completed it, but I'd advise an overnight stay in Kerry if you're doing that. Alternately you can see some of the best bits on a full day trip; believe me the journey is worth it. Head to Kenmare, a lovely small town, through Molls Gap and then journey down the truely spectacular route to Killarney. There are numerous stop-offs on the way. The road is narrow and full of twists, but the views are wonderful. Killarney itself is host to thousands of tourists, and some very good hotels." - Martin
